Overall I feel the organisation of the exhibition had a few complications and in my opinion we could’ve gone about them differently.
The first complication was organising the bake sale, Naomi was given the job of organising it within the University Campus. However due to form conditions changing we were led to improvise for another location last minute. Lucy emailed Cascades from an idea that myself and Nikki gave and they fortunately let us hold our fundraiser there. Myself and Lucy contributed by baking a variety of goods for the sale, and Nikki helped by carrying some trays with us to set up. Two members of our group only stayed for one hour which I personally found rude as the rest of us were left to do everything else. Nevertheless we managed to raise most of the money for the venue so we only had to do one more which I managed to do mostly by myself. It was a long day starting at 8:30am but I managed to raise £43 from the raffle of the giant cupcake which I made.
The next complication was a disagreement on invites and the event held on Facebook. The disagreement was about colour and design but fortunately we managed to compromise with what we could, combining all the ideas together which resulted in the final design.
However, there was one complication throughout the entire project, which was communication. We found that even though we were in a group chat on Facebook there was still a lack of communication due to people ignoring the messages or not even reading them. It was something that we just had to deal with eventually, in my opinion I don’t think this could have been handled in any other way. When we did manage to communicate with each other things were dealt with, it just took perseverance.
Personally throughout this project I felt my skills improved greatly with the workshops being held at the university and I learned new ones as well, such as the framing workshop. I learned about new machinery and what the purpose was for each one. However due to the time frame I will not follow through with this installation process, but I may look to do it in the near future now that I know what facilities are available to us.
I feel that my confidence has grown greatly during this project because of putting my ideas into the group and talking to the public when we were doing the fundraiser. This was mainly because I wanted to get things done as well as possible. Communication skills are fundamental in running an exhibition as well as listening skills, everyone has to have a say and we each gave a sufficient amount of input for this exhibition, to enjoy the experience as much as possible.
Another skill I feel that I have developed when doing this project is my curator skills. The curator skills include; planning, developing and presenting the final exhibition. This is my first proper exhibition in a hired venue, so I have learned how to develop my project to suit the venue that it is being held in, and how to arrange it accordingly in the Square Tower.
In conclusion I feel I have developed my current skills and learned many new ones in which I can use in my future work and exhibitions thanks to the workshops given to us. It has also given me the information in what facilities are available to us which we can use whilst at the University.
The exhibition has shown me that communication is fundamental in group work and compromise is a key factor in working together as a group.
Overall it has been an enjoyable experience for me and I would like to do it again, but with the situations being dealt differently.
